  1. The blurb on the back of the book says, in part, "As Stravinsky enjoys a new burst of creativity, Chanel brings forth her own revolutionary creation---the perfume Chanel No. 5. But when their love threatens to overtake work, family and life, the couple must consider whether their relationship can survive." Had I written the blurb it would have said, "At the cusp of the roaring '20's in Paris, a rich supporter of the arts Coco Chanel, an orphan in a society of class, rose to change women's wear f [...]

  2. Such a pretty cover, but not much more. I had no idea that Stravinsky and Chanel had an affair. I was intrigued by that bit of history, especially since Stravinsky is one of my favorite composers and Chanel is fascinating, especially for her perfume. But back to this book I should have noticed that this was a fictionalized novel about the affair. I would've been leery of it had I noticed. People such as these, especially put together under scandalous circumstances, don't need the help of fiction [...]

  3. COCO CHANEL & IGOR STRAVINSKY. (2002, 2009). Chris Greenhalgh. ****.Sometimes things don’t work out like you planned. I ordered this novel and the feature film based on it at the same time from the library. They arrived two weeks apart. I watched the film and had to return it in one week; that’s what they give you for movies. Here’s the novel. The author of this book was also the author of the screenplay, so if you have seen one you have essentially read the book. It is a marvelous boo [...]

  5. Many of the reader reviews say this book is badly written, but I couldn't disagree more. The book balances scene and summary nicely; the scenes are well dramatized, and the summary is dense, lyrical, figurative. I'm not surprised to learn that the author is also a poet. As for the "likeability" of the characters, well, artists of this caliber *are* generally sort of assholes--ambitious, selfish, self-absorbed--and that is the point of the story, I think. It's fascinating to watch these two iconi [...]

  6. The only thing I know about Coco Chanel is that she designed clothes and had a very famous perfume that some French peasant dumped into the bathtub during The Vistors. The only thing I know about Igor Stravinksy is that his "Rite of Spring" was in Disney's Fantasia, which is where I first heard it. (It is amazing that most people's exposure to classical music starts with cartoons, isn't it?). I don't know how much of this work is fiction. It's an okay book. Part of the problem is that the two tit [...]

  7. 1. I really only read this book because the movie interested me. Based on this book, I'm sure the movie is first rate . . . at least according to the rules of Truffaut (second rate novels make first rate movies, allegedly!).2. The good thing about this novel is the wealth of physical detail. And of course, it's a very interesting premise for a novel, with a tight focus.2a. Although I think the focus works against it a bit. Not as much as other parts of the book, but there are bunches of interest [...]

  8. You've all heard of Coco Chanel, the famous fashion designer? Well this is the story of her amorous relationship with the composer Igor Stravinsky. Over the summer of 1913 she puts up the Stravinksy's in her beautiful estate in Grasse and brings an expected level of chaos into their lives.Having know little of Chanel but her clothes before picking up this gem of a novel I was surprised to learn of her complicated life. After all a bastard orphan up-starter isn't exactly what I would picture when [...]

  9. In hindsight I changed my rating from 3 to 2 stars. It was a fucking depressing read. It wasn't a good, slightly comforting depression either just straight up sad. The story revolves around Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky and the summer affair they had at Coco's newly purchased country home. It was a pathetic affair. Igor taking 20 minutes from his afternoon to be carnal with Chanel in his studio which is conveniently located under his bedroom and is resident to his despondent wife who happens t [...]

  10. This book was quite giggle-worthy. The florid descriptions were quite awesome and if not for those, this book would only contain about 75 pages of actual action and driving story. The events covered within seem to take place over the course of maybe a month. I'm not really sure since I had no idea about the affair of Coco and Igor prior to reading this. Honestly, I had no knowledge of the two people at all. And it seems that, despite having lived amazing lives as separate individuals, the affair [...]

  11. Coco Chanel has had a lot of attention recently including two movies. And now this fictional biography explores another angle--her relationship with the composer Igor Stravinsky. I enjoyed the exploration of their overlapping lives with the backdrop of the roaring twenties and thirties. Stravinsky was much more passive than his strident and bold music suggests. The attraction was based on their respect of each other's creativity and originality. In that area of life they were kindred spirits eve [...]

  12. As much as I love Gabrielle Chanel the book was written quite poorly-sex scenes were worse than a beach reads! There were interesting aspects of the book but for me the highlite of the book was the chonology of her life parallel to Igor Stravinskys in the final pages of the book. I would be interested to read a more serious biography about her in the future.

  13. It was a good read, if only because it was a period piece and highlights the start of her career and how the two influenced each other. It was a quick read as well, finished on two flights.

  14. This book is set (except for footnotes) in the one year period in 1920 during which Coco Chanel had an affair with Ivor Stravinsky after inviting Stravinsky, his wife Catherine, and their two children to move into the new estate which she had purchased in Paris near her clothes designing, production, and sales establishments. Much is made of Chanel's defensiveness about being "in commerce" versus having been in a long established family with inherited wealth and/or royal connections. An introduc [...]

  15. I thought, because I love both of these artists, that I would enjoy a book about them. Unfortunately I did not. This book was all surface and not nearly enough depth. I feel like the author did his research but could have done so much more with this book. I need to cleanse my palette by listening to The Firebird.

  16. First off, just have to say I wish the title was something more enticing. Even just shortening it to Coco & Igor would have been cool. Just seems like having nothing but their full names makes it kinda feel like a high school essay. That's just my two cents. Movin' onGreenhalgh's novel is a fictional take on the relationship between iconic French clothing designer Coco Chanel and the (married) composer Igor Stravinksy. Coco Chanel, in this story, is a young woman who seems to catch the eye o [...]

  17. I have very mixed feelings about this novel. Coco Chanel is a woman I admire very much, she is one of my great inspirations, and her life was fascinating. She was a self-made woman who rose from literal rags to riches through her hard work and ambition, she was at the head of a business empire when men controlled the fashion and cosmetic industry, and she created a modern style of clothing for women that still influences fashion to this day. Now isn’t that amazing? And yet when people bring he [...]

  18. "Stravinsky was reputed to have been a philanderer, rumored to have had affairs with high-profile partners such as Coco Chanel. Stravinsky never referred to such an affair himself, but Chanel spoke about it at length to her biographer Paul Morand in 1946, and the conversation was published 30 years later.[37] The accuracy of Chanel's claims have been disputed by Stravinsky's widow Vera and his amanuensis Robert Craft, beginning two years after the publication of Morand's biography, even while co [...]

  19. I decided to read this book after downloading the trailer for the film from and watching it on iTunes. The writer is a poet and sometimes that shows in the text. It was not hard to get through and well written as the author does a good job of showing just how the title characters were repulsive not only in their choosing to have an affair, but in their justification as to why. While Chanel invites the composer and his family to live with her at her country home in order to start an affair with h [...]

  20. I have to say that I first heard of this story by seeing a preview for the film. Then I saw the film. I loved the film. I did not know at the time that it was based on a novel. I knew very little about the two main characters. What I knew of Stravinsky, I learned in my music appreciation class. I did not know anything about Chanel. I really enjoyed Mr. Greenhalgh's writing style. He did a lot of research. I enjoyed this historical piece of fiction. As for the characters:Igor: He is extremely sel [...]

  21. The book “Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky” written by Chris Greenhalgh gives the audience a glimpse into the glamorous lives of Ms. Chanel and Mr. Stravinsky and how their lives once intertwined. This book is based on historical accuracy as reflected in the timeline at the end of the book. Miss Chanel is presented as perceived; she is fierce, independent, playful and completely devoted to her work. Yet the story mainly revolves around Stravinsky and his family. The story starts out with th [...]

  22. Ok, but not as good as the film.Chris Greenhalgh is, I believe, a British writer. I found his style was trying too hard to be 'artsy', by describing very literally the actions and thoughts of his characters, all in the present tense and from everyone's point of view indiscriminately. Some of his analogies, similes, metaphors etc, were fun and original, but overall I found the style a bit silly and repetitive. It also made it very hard to sympathise with anyone, because actually, there wasn't muc [...]

  23. SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW!!!!!!I like Chris Greenhalgh's writing style a lot -- his vivid descriptions are great, especially of the sky and stars, the lights of Paris, the smells of the fresh garden and the perfumes, the sounds that Stravinsky hears when he is composing his music. I also think that Mr. Greenhalgh did a great job in creating very real characters, although I did not like any of the main characters at all. They were the most selfish and self-absorbed people one could possibly imagine [...]

  24. I will be the first to admit I began this book because of Coco. While I really liked the tense the book was written in (different, but appropriate to the story, I felt), I'm not so sure I'm happy with the story. It took most of the book before they truly began their affair, and it wasn't even a good one. They had such great faults in the novel: she was headstrong and almost selfish and he was shy and almost embarrassing. I really found myself hating the both of them towards the ending, (I mean, [...]

  25. This book was given to me as a gift; I'm not sure I would have purchased it on my own. While I am a lover of classical music, I've never really been a slave to fashion. The book is historical fiction, based loosely on fact. It is lightweight reading, not tedious and probably a good book to read when travelling. After reading the book, I Googled Stravinsky, because I was honestly unaware of his dalliance with Coco Chanel and curious as to how history really saw it. Stravinsky's biography doesn't [...]

  26. I wanted to read this book because I have a keen interest in music history and love learning the backstories of the composers I study and to whom I listen. The backstories can often be so telling of how one's music or art is affected by their personal lives, and this book does just that with not only the famous Russian composer Stravinsky, but also the fashion revolutionary Coco Chanel. Individually, they were each successful within their art, and had entire lives devoted to it, but this book te [...]

  27. I was disappointed. That is all. I kept waiting for something amazing to change my impression of the book. Its fiction and that is sort of what I expected. I wanted something more exciting about Coco and Igor. I wanted the glamour and excitement and the love. Instead, I read an account of one of Chanel’s affairs. She didn’t seem that glamourous and her brand was hardly mentioned. Igor was just a man obsessed with music whose character didn’t really develop beyond his compositions. The only [...]

  28. Admittedly, I am not a fashionista. So I knew not much about Coco Chanel, other than she was a famous fashion designer, had a perfume and made old lady suits. However, while and after reading this, I wanted to become more of a fashion-minded person. Her life is pretty fascinating. Not only is she pretty self-centered, but more importantly, she was a feminist. Who knew? Probably a lot of people, but not I. She made pants for women (the horror!), and thankfully also made pearls a fashion statement [...]
