    2. It's got so much atmosphere, you'll be seeing everything in black & white whenever you put it down. A hotel detective is gunned down in a barber's chair by none other than Spencer Tracy in post-war Milwaukee. Work-a-day police lieutenant Joe Sonntag is assigned the case and combs the victim's past looking for an explanation.     3. Essentially a police procedural, this book has plenty of 1940's atmosphere, but much of it is lost by being set in Milwaukee. If you're familiar with that city you'll probably enjoy that aspect of it a lot.

    4. I couldn't put it down -- and not just because I am the author of a memoir of the same title, which, of course, motivated me to buy Brand's book.
