    1. Read this review and more on my blogThe Book Return Blog'Laerka' is a modern-day retelling of  the fairytale 'The Little Mermaid'. Stella is a teenager in modern-day Savannah, Georgia. While working a part-time job in Savannah's port, she sees a women (who she thinks is a mermaid) jump from a Russian container ship into the ocean. What I LovedI thought the choice of  Savannah, Georgia as the setting for 'Laerka' was a great choice. Savannah is such a unique  and beautiful place. It also has a [...]

    2. Beautiful prose. A captivating voice. Powerful imagery. Laerka has the bones of a literary fiction novel with its masterful styling and intoxicating touches of humor, but it’s got the meat of a thriller as it uncovers a human trafficking ring. But that’s not all, folks. Stella, a sixteen-year-old girl with a heart the size of Texas, weaves in the musings of a young adult, furthering this book’s genre nonconformity. Last but not least we’re introduced to an incredibly gothic fantasy of me [...]

Stella can't believe what she's seen, and sets out to unravel the mystery of that woman, Laerka. She finds a tangled web of human trafficking, illegal immigration, and shady dragons! I found the book engaging. Ms. Bendoly [...]

    4. I am giving it two stars by the originality it presents in the world created by the author, but near 70% of the book it began to seem to be padding nowhere and I began to lose interest fast. Laerka mistery was nothing that intrigued me anymore and the same can be said about their mermaid-ish fellas.
