I loved this book,but I have to take exception to some of these reviews.Barnabas Salmon travels to a remote ,rural place and does not find a close knit community .He finds a narrow minded,judgmental one.I think many people are missing the point of this novel.He is a good man,a charming one even,but he is also intelligent and very angry.The killer line in the novel is the remark after his death "who would tend to the old,the lonely and the sick now?"   2. I received this book for Christmas from a friend in Cornwall. It is not a big book, but it is one that needs to be read slowly because for all that it is a light read, it packs an enormous punch. It tells the story of a priest who retires from his parish in the UK and who settles in a rural community in remote West Cork in Ireland.   3. I came across this book quite by chance while on holiday in the Kerry region of Ireland. I have to say that to begin with I found it a little slow and not being religious I was wary since the hero is a priest. However, it soon becomes apparent that Father Barnabas Salmon is not your average cleric, if he was, the churches would be full to bursting point.
