    1. GORILLAS UP CLOSE by Christena Nippert-Eng is an amazing, informational book exploring all aspects of the gorilla world. Designed for middle grade readers, the book contains dozens of short chapters examining the lives of gorillas both in the wild and living in zoos. While learning facts about these creatures, readers will also enjoy getting to know individual gorillas by name. The book concludes with tips, additional resources, an author’s note, and index. From the adorable cover photograph to [...]

    2. An excellent middle grade nonfiction look at gorillas, and more specifically, about the gorillas who live at the Lincoln Park Zoo (which was a bonus as someone who has been there many times and seen these guys). I loved the talk about how different the lives of gorillas are in the wild vs being in zoos, as well as the role those in the zoos play for keeping the endangered species alived for us to learn more about them. Neat fact: gorillas have noses that are like our unique finger prints. The nar [...]

    3. Absolutely wonderful book about the gorillas at the Lincoln Park Zoo, it is full of great photos, detailed information and clear descriptions of the everyday lives of these gorillas. If you plan on visiting the zoo in the next year, or if you want to learn more about the lives of zoo gorillas in North America, this is essential reading. I have been in love with Kwan, the silverback in the remaining family troup at Lincoln Park, since I first saw him; getting to know all his current wives and all [...]

It is well structured to hold interest in over forty short chapters of ten pages or less and brimming with photos each more appealing than the last. Readers will become familiar with gorillas’ personalities, their habits, and their family relationships. Anecdotes about specific gorillas personalize them and show how each gorilla in a modern zoo is part of a caref [...]

    5. As part of this blog tour we were invited to select a title, a STEM publication, from a list of books. I requested Gorillas Up Close (Henry Holt and Company, April 19, 2016) written by Christena Nippert-Eng with John Dominski, Frederick Grier, Jim Hornor, Eugene Limb, Sally Limb and Miguel Martinez. Forty-one chapters including an introduction, acknowledgments, author's note, about the authors and an index (176 pages) give us an informative and intimate look at gorillas living in zoos.My full re [...]
