    1. Is it mind-blowing? No.Is it ground-breaking? No.Is it everything I want whenever I look for a good old ghost story? Hell. Freaking. Yes.It is well written, the pace is good, the build-up is perfect and the scary moments actually managed to scare me (well, almost, I'm big girl with a life-long obsession with horror and the occult, so kudos for making me uncomfortable) No, I'm not reading Edgar Allan Poe here, I am well aware of that, but damn I absolutely loved this novel and would recommend it [...]

    2. Pretty typical haunted house story: girl loses job; girl decides best thing to do with money is buy haunted house; realtor is all, "People DIE here!"; girl is all, "Shut up and take my money!"; girl sees dead people; girl calls realtor and is all, "WTF! People DIED here!"; realtor is all, "Que? No hablo ingles! Donde es el bano?"; girl meets spiritualists at Hot Topic; spiritualists are all, "WTF, people DIED here! Donde Es la biblioteca and the front door?"; girl discovers latent ability to van [...]

    3. 5/2/17 $2.99 for Kindle, $1.99 to add Audible. Not really that scary (notice I'm *not* classifying this one as "horror"), but a decent read. Has some creepy parts, but nothing that'd make me want to sleep with the lights on.

    4. This is seriously the scariest book I've ever read. If you're into everything horror, everything ghostly, everything is your next read. Mara buys an unwanted haunted house. This house had a haunted history in its 100+ years in existence. Violent deaths and murders have occurred. Not to mention, the slamming doors and footsteps. Mara wanted it anyway. She buys the house, but the ghosts are free! Not a book to read at night before bed! Or perhaps, it is the perfect book to read at night [...]

    5. It was a pretty good storyline, however the overly repetitive nature of the interactions between the two characters was distracting. Then there were the small details that were overlooked (example, her cell phone dies and she has a generator that allows her to watch a move on the VCR). Those little details bothered me an pulled me away from the story. I enjoyed the audible version as I drive a great deal and will try another of her books since I enjoy is type of novel. Give it a shot and see wha [...]

    6. The Haunting of Blackwood House by Darcy Coates is an excellent haunted house story. Great plot, characters and a good scare. Gal of the story grows up with nutty spiritualist family and finally gets to leave and for four years has lived on her own away from the scam artists. She gets a chance to buy a house no one once because it is "haunted" but she knows from her childhood that all of those hauntings are fake. She buys the house and things get strange. Hard to find a good haunted house story [...]

    7. Mara was raised in a spiritual house - seances, ouija boards, mediums, the whole shebang. As soon as she turns 18, she moves out and abandons the spiritualist lifestyle because she thinks it's all a sham. Years later, she decides to purchase Blackwood House, regardless of its past history. As soon as she moves in, things start to get a liiiiittle bit creepy.Okay, this was a decent book don't get me wrong but I fucking hated the protagonist, Mara. She was obnoxiously oblivious to what was happeni [...]

    8. 5 Cup of Tea read. video review youtube/watch?v=h_J9zThis is the perfect ghost story. Mara is the daughter of spiritualist and she does not believe. Mara gets lucky and is able to buy the stunning Blackwood house but it puts everything she believes in to the test. The pace is great and the characters loveable. I foud the scares perfect and I love that Darcy Coates can scare you without using gruesome or gory details. they are proper scares that will have you jumping at every noise in your own hom [...]

    9. A little slow at times but enough action to keep it interesting. I wish there were more details to explain her extreme hatred towards spiritualism. It seemed a little overboard and hard for me to accept. Why would she hate all religions just because she was raised spiritualist? (I.e. making her boyfriend hide crosses and such)

    10. Mara grew up in a spiritual home. She was brought up to believe in ghosts and haunted houses. She didn't believe and left that life as soon as she was able. Now its been years on her own and she finally is buying a house. Blackwood House is a great house for her. Once moved in, things come to light about the houses past and its former inhabitants and she soon finds herself in danger. It's left up to her to rid the house of the evil within its walls. This book was really good. Its got the scary pa [...]

    11. Actual rating: 1.5 starsThis wouldn't have been as bad a book, but the main character Mara was one of the most insufferable characters I've encountered in a book in a long time. She was, to put it succinctly, a brat. I think she was supposed to be portrayed as a strong, independent woman, but instead she came off as a rigid, stubborn, and rude woman who treated her boyfriend (and others) like crap, and absolutely would not entertain any idea or opinion if it even slight hinted at anything supern [...]

    12. Expectations can be problematic and potentially upsetting when not met. The above sentences sums up my thoughts on the book rather well. This book could have been brilliant and to a degree some parts were, the "night time episodes" were very good and did freak me at times but that is quite literally the only good thing. One of my main reasons for liking a book is the characters, their personality, reliability and development however this book had very little of any of these aspects.I had a hard [...]

    13. 5 starsI really enjoyed this book! Funny, creepy, supernatural, an old haunted house that needs cleaning and a nice slow build up with a good history/back story.I have another book to read by this author and if it's like this I know I'll enjoy it, I just hope it's not exactly the same as this because that'd be shitty and boring.

    14. Expectations can be a bit problematic but still a good book.Various thoughts on The Haunting of Blackwood House Expectations can be a bit problematic. I had already read The Haunting of Gillespie House and due to the similar title and cover design I was anticipating another "proper gothic adventure" in the vein of Gillespie House, well if you are expecting that as well I will inform you right now this book is not really in the classic gothic style that Gillespie House was. Yes, it is a story of [...]

    15. I've loved ghost and haunted house stories since I was a child, but I've found that when it comes to that genre, it is increasingly difficult to find books that rely more on psychological scares than on monsters and/or unrelenting gore. Darcy Coates has managed to do just that: there is just enough violence to add to the overall disturbing atmosphere, but the passages detailing that element don't ramble on and get bogged down in overly macabre, unnecessarily gruesome details. Instead, she takes [...]

    16. Very rarely do I ever come across a character that annoys me so much. Mara is probably the most stubborn (especially when she’s wrong and the entire world as well as her loved one tells her so) easy to hate woman. A fleeting thought in my mind was, could the effects of the house (evoking hate) be passed onto the reader through this pig-headed woman? It’s one thing being proud, honorable, independent and self reliant. It’s another to reject care and concern by being stupidly stubborn. The on [...]

    17. while the concept of this book was interesting, typical haunted house story with an antagonist who does not believe in ghosts. I found myself hating the main character with a passion. Shes stubborn, arrogant, spoiled and all around a generally unlikeable person. To be perfectly honest I can tell the author was trying to make Mara super independent but only managed to make her seem like the most unreasonable woman in the world. Her treatment of others, especially her boyfriend borders on emotiona [...]

    18. Review: THE HAUNTING OF BLACKWOOD HOUSE by Darcy CoatesWow wow and wow. My "go-to author" of horror has delivered again! Commencing with an uproarious (scary!) Reader's hook, we are then allowed to take a breath and relax, for a while. Ms. Coates then begins to build the horror, subtly at first, so we readers are like a frog in a pot slowly coming to boiling point. It doesn't take long to reach SCARY. Protagonist Mara is a wonderful backdrop to whatever everybody else, past and present, sees as [...]

    19. Awesome Read! This was a great book! I love haunted house settings and this book did not disappoint! Very gripping and thrilling. Creepy moments to the point where I kept looking around every time I heard a sound! Makes you feel like you are in the house with the characters. Actually this book would make a good horror movie! Definitely a five star read! Keep up the awesome work, Darcy Coates! Another great horror author added to my list!

    20. The premise of the book was really cool but I couldn’t get over how unbearable the main character was throughout the whole book. It’s your typical creepy house in the woods story but Mara, the main character, is annoying and just horrible to the people around her. I think the author was trying to portray her more as an independent woman but it just struck me the wrong way and ruined the book for me.

    21. HAUNTING OF BLACKWOOD HOUSEI really enjoyed reading this one even though there's no way in hell you would or could get me into BLACKWOOD HOUSE.I honestly don't remember where it now I found this book but I'm sure glad I was finally able to read it and remove it from my book list. You like hauntings and such well just step into this one and don't sleep with the lights off

    22. Think about the most spoiled, unruly, and brattiest (Google says that's not a word, but I say it is) child you have ever come into contact with. Can you see them? Do you feel that intense rage just starting to bubble up thinking about being in their company? Now imagine if that child had a baby with Golem you now have a clear picture of the main character's personalty. That's right, and that's only the beginning. Mara is probably the most miserable, immature, abusive, sociopath who - more often [...]

    23. If your a fan of Darcy Coates writing you will find a few unexpected twists in this novel. Many of the aspects are the same as her previous book, "The Haunting of the Gillespie House" Such as the house, the girl and the scare but she puts twists on this novel that will make you squirm. When your past haunts you and your future is unsure where do you stand amidst it all. When times comes to face those fears will the person who is standing with you stay or run? Read this novel with little expectat [...]

    24. Surprisingly clean books. They are just good ghost stories where the characters have back stories and personalities and quirks. I like how this author writes spooky without garbaging it up. Mara's personality cracked me up. I think Neil was the perfect balance. Can't wait for the next one.

    25. I've now read of all the "The Haunting of." books by this author, and although I liked them all, this one was my favorite. The same general formula applies to all the books in this collection, and yet each one manages to be it's own unique story. Mara grew up in a family of spiritualists, and as a child was very frightened and even a bit emotionally scarred by it all. As she got older, she slowly uncovered all the tricks of the trade her family and their friends used to conduct fake seances, etc [...]

    26. I’m starting to really love Darcy Coates. My husband however might ban me from reading these on my kindle In bed at night because I end up clinging to him like a sweaty angsty limpet when the good parts start freaking me out 😂Mara was a little bit annoying but it worked out ok girl stuck to her convictions at least.
