    1. i was delighted with this book. i found it amusing and clever, but not TOO clever, and no TOO amusing. just the right amount of both. mm!

    2. I started reading this book expecting something utterly different from what I've just finished to read and, at first, I was quite disappointed. Then, making it my goal to go through it, I began to like it for the satyrical language and the hilarious description of the characters. I particularly liked the second part of the book, that concerning the tour on the Rhine, which is a perfect parody of the grand tour. The last part, a pantomime, remembered me something of Candide by Voltaire. All in al [...]

    3. These weren't really Christmassy stories, rather they were the sort of stories which would be read at Christmas time. The final story which was a children's Twelfth Night story was the best. It was funny and had some good word play in it.The other stories weren't particularly memorable so it took me quite a while to get through them.

    5. Some of these tales seem to be starts of things, however no matter how short the lemming v cliff edge endings are, the observations are very funny.Perfect traveling companion 2.5* Including:Mrs. Perkins's BallOur StreetDr. Birch and his Young FriendsThe Kickleburys on the RhineThe Rose and the Ring; or, The History of Prince Giglio and Prince Bulbo

    6. A charming book to dip into at Christmas time; stories such as 'Mrs Perkins' Ball' use the loose framework of a party to introduce a series of character sketches accompanied by caricatural illustrations. A very lighthearted and witty piece of social history, and still very enjoyable today.

    7. I'll go back to this in the future - meant to read it over the Christmas period but only got round to a couple of the stories, which I enjoyed but didn't think were among his best.
