    4. One issue that arises in association with Nobel Prize winners is the reappearance of early volumes long out of print. That's the case with my local library's acquisition of The Round and Other Cold Hard Facts by Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio. This bleak collection of stories came out in 1982, early in Le Clezio's career. It is notable its varied depictions of the sterility of the modern world, its sympathy for undeveloped characters, and its consistent search for new ways to narrate disaster in th [...]

    6. This was definitely one of Le Clezio's less chipper books. His older more experimental stuff was technically more bleak, but the grandiose nature of the prose and tack of specificity kind of made up for it. His other less experimental work that I read, Desert, wasn't exactly a barrel of Monkeys either, but the ultimately downbeat nature of it was compensated for by the beautiful layering done over the course of the relatively long narrative. With each story here being pretty much a pisser and be [...]

    11. Stark, harsh, anxious, violent - words that can describe Le Clézio's powerful collection of short stories; sories that portray the struggles of the poor, the dispossessed, society's unwanted immigrants. The following excerpt is from one of the more poignant stories, "O Thief, What is the Life You Lead?":". . . But sometimes too I tell myself that it will never, ever end because rich people have no consideration for the poor, and they couldn't care less; they keep their riches for themselves, cl [...]

    12. It took me a while to get used to Le Clézio's highly descriptive writing, but I ended up enjoying it. His writing is like those cameras that film in slow motion, but in this case, instead of fast-paced scenes, the reader ends up with slow-motion ones. Do not take me wrong; that is exactly the beauty of the several short stories in the book, all of which are daily facts that could happen to any regular person. The fact that it is composed of several stories is also a smart call, due to the fact [...]

    13. A bit excessive in the long descriptive passages in the service of creating generally bleak moods and environments for the characters to act out stories which are a bit too blatantly politically leftist for my tastes ("oh!, pity the downtrodden, expoited, etc"). There is some real poetic writing, however, which raises it from 2 to 3 stars for me.

    14. This is a collection of 11 stories, mostly dealing with either poverty or the ugliness of modern life. Very uneven, and none of the stories really struck me. The characters mostly try to run away from poverty; there is no question of resistance or any kind of organized response. As usual in Le Clezio, the main characters are almost all children or adolescents.

    15. Wonderful short stories in English, most about disenfranchised young people. His favorite color, blue, shows up a lot in these stories. My favorites are "The Round," and "Anne's Game" and its shifts in level of reality and time. Get a hint of Le Clezio from reading some of these shorts. They're great.

    16. I chose this book because Le Clézio had just won the Nobel Prize, and I wanted to see why. I really enjoyed how he captured so many landscapes, a great variety of characters in a short book of stories. Some of them were really hard to swallow though, the images often very violent or desperate. I really enjoyed the story about the two girls from the provinces who go traveling.

    17. Beautiful writing (would that my French was good enough to read the original), beautiful imagery, but the stories are a cavalcade of the worst horrors of life--rape, suicide, oppressed immigrants, overdevelopment

    19. The stories were not bad, but depressing and I wasn't in the mood. I read it in the english translation and think it would have been better in the original language.

    20. Really descriptive rich writing in these short stories about less-than-privileged people. Disturbing and simple tales. I'll be reading more of LeClezio.
