  1. This is a useful book as a starting point for learning about tragedy as an art form, but it is mainly an exploration of several works: Oedipus, Faust (Marlow, not Goethe), King Lear, The Scarlet Letter, Moby Dick, The Brothers Karamazov, Absalom, Absalom!, The Trial, and A Long Day's Journey Into Night. It is a very old book from the 1950's and this is not the place to go for current literary theory.
