    2. Two stars for the great writing that Poe is capable of and another one for the Sherlock-like, wonderful "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." Can't recommend this book, and I'm glad it's over.

    3. There's suspense but it's not too scary, perfect for a scaredy cat like me, old school psychological terror and the supernatural.

    4. Poe is brilliant. Disturbing, but brilliant. In these stories, he can create a chilling scene like nobody's business! I've had this book on my shelves for years, and it feels good to finally have read through it!

    8. Mr Poe was one sick puppy. Nevertheless these stories were far more entertaining than I thought they'd be. The mystery ones were a bit hard going when the narrator gave lectures on logic and occasionally the stories were so gothic they were laughable. At other times though, they were so unexpectedly violent and depraved they were disturbing (animal lovers best not read 'the black cat'). He's also good at building suspense and capturing narrative voice, mostly of unhinged people (see 'telltale he [...]

    10. This was for school so we didn't read all of the stories.Short review for this one because I think most people have read some Poe. I like Poe and I've got another book with his poems, so I think I'll look into those too! Recommend it!

    11. Are you tired of predictable, dull, ordinary fiction novels? Become captivated by the grim twists of Edgar Allan Poe’s enthralling collection of masterpieces:The Gold-Bug and Other Tales. Embark on a gothic journey through the mystery, tragedy, and horror of nine of Poe’s classic short stories to Germany, North England, the Rue Montmartre in Paris, a hut on Sullivan's island in South Carolina, and mysterious unknown locations of a haunted estate, a prison cell during the Spanish inquisition, [...]

    12. Are the smartest people the craziest? “The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins? (Edgar Allen Poe)” Troubled, or genius? All sorts of grim themes are explored in “The Gold Bug and Other Tales”. This collection of short, fictional narratives uncovers mysterious topics described in graphic, lifelike language.Focusing on just one of Poe’s works written titled “ The Tell-Tale Heart”, a settin [...]

    16. I read the book The Gold-Bug and Other Tales, a collection of short stories written by Edgar Allen Poe. Poe writes his stories for entertainment, and yes they really entertained me. The short stories include; Ligeia (1838), The Fall of the House of Usher (1839), The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841), The Masque of the Red Death (1842), The Pit and the Pendulum (1842), The Tell-Tale Heart (1843), The Gold-Bug (1843), The Black Cat (1843), and The Cask of Amontillado (1846). Throughout all of Poe [...]

    17. I haven't read any Poe since high school (where we studied him heavily) so I am glancing back at him in this season.Poe tends to be painfully florid, often ponderous, and possesses a comical obsession with brittle women, as well as an apparent fetish for entombing people in walls. All of this I already knew, but I did not fully appreciate his gruesome humor, undoubtedly his greatest attribute.'The Black Cat' is a hilarious, perfect story, especially for those of us who have admired and subsequent [...]

    18. From " Aldous Huxley wrote that Poe's writing "falls into vulgarity" by being "too poetical"—the equivalent of wearing a diamond ring on every finger.[120]". Being that Poe was seemingly always in rears and struggling (something one might expect from the first American who was trying to live solely on his earnings from writing) it would seem that a bit of "braggadocio" was in order. He made much of his earnings as a critic and his writing indicates that he was well ahead of his time in skill [...]

    19. Magistral.

    20. I'm finished with this book (for now) because I only wanted to read the short story "The Gold Bug".Why that story? On May 27 2016, on the TV game show Jeopardy, the Final Jeopardy category was "19th Century Novels" and the clue was "The Gold Bug, Edgar Allan Poe's story about the search for Captain Kidd's buried loot helped inspire this 1883 novel."That novel was Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and that is my next book to read.I doubt that an animated scarab beetle made of solid gold m [...]

    22. Pretty creepy read overall. Poe was definitely ahead of his time when it comes to horror. I skipped The Black Cat, because I really wasn't up to a story about animal torture. I was surprised by how much of a role logic and deduction played in some of these stories--Murders at the Rue Morgue and The Gold Bug were really mysteries.Ligea and The Fall of the House of Usher were extremely disturbing. The Pit and the Pendulum was probably my favorite, if only because (view spoiler)[it has a happy endi [...]

    23. This is a great collection of tales by Edgar Allan Poe. They range from the more mundane yet adventurous, "The Gold-Bug," to the dark and truly twisted, "The Black Cat."What strikes me most about the tales collected here, especially "The Black Cat" and "The Tell-Tale Heart" is the simple lack of motivation behind the horrible deeds done. Written in first person, the main character in each has no idea why he does the awful things he does, just that he has grown "dark and twisted in his soul."Defi [...]

    24. It's been rather strange that I have had an interest in horror fiction for at least a decade, yet until a week ago I could count the Edgar Allan Poe stories I had read on one hand. That's my main motivation for reading this anthology, and the most amazing thing about it? Once the reader gets over the antiquated linguistics, not to mention certain cultural and social norms having changed radically over the last 200 years, the stories found within feel every bit as exciting and vivid as they must [...]

    25. The infinite Reading Challenge (2015) A book of short stories.
