    3. I absolutely love the Animal Series books. They are about humanity's relationships with the various animals they cover, rather than being strict biological accounts. They include biological information of course, but alongside history of science and culture that shows how our ideas about the featured animal have evolved over time, and how our relationship with that animal has shaped human history as well as life for that animal.Whale outlines the history of the whale in our culture. What ancient [...]

    5. It's a pretty quick read but a great overview of the relationship between humans and whales. Written in layman's terms it doesn't get very scientific and has lots of great pictures in color. Still, it gets the point across of the blatant exploitation of whales that once mirrored our current exploitation of other natural resources. Things have changed for the whale, several species of which came way closer to mass extinction that we're all probably comfortable with (and many are still struggling [...]

    6. The second of this series I've read, and again a really fascinating read. Not a huge amount of depth, obviously, but by covering all aspects of man's relationship with the whale, from cultural impact to the whaling industry, it's a great concise introduction to the subject. I'll admit to being fascinated by whaling, as horrific and heartbreaking as it is. The account here is factual rather than preachy, but there's no disguising the outrage we as a species have wrought on this magnificent animal [...]

    7. A few of the books in this series jumped off the library shelf at me as I sat writing. I'm currently intrigued with the scope, nature, design choices, and production quality of various series. These books appear to be greatly expanded encyclopedia articles: historical, cultural, economic, and environmental aspects of an animal, with illustrations running the gamut as well. At first glance of the spine, I thought these would be taxonomical in nature, but they are much broader.
