    1. I have to admit, I never finished this. But, truly, Gehring wore me down. I mean, I admired the great thought put into the extensive analysis, but in the end it all struck me as overanalysis to the max. Comedy generally can't bear up under this kind of analytical assault; one threatens to kill the thing one loves by doing that. The comedy of W.C. Fields, for example, can be explained up to a point, but after that, you either get him or you don't. This book kind of missed that point, I thought.
