  1. On October 10, 1944, the United States Navy and Army landed on the Philippines Island of Leyte between Tacloban and Dulag. Five days later the Back of the Imperial Japanese Navy was broken at the Battle of the Leyte Gulf, which was massive. At one point the huge invasion flotilla was saved by the plucky actions of its tiny Escort Carrier Group, in the battle of Samar.
