    2. I picked this book up from a sale bin in an independent bookstore, intrigued by the propspect of a noir detective story set in the San Francisco Bay Area. I very nearly gave up several times while reading it, but I perservered in order to learn what this writer had done well enough to get published. First of all, he married Isabel Allende.
