    1. I finished this book almost in 24 hours, because I simply couldn't put it down. Right now I feel sorry about hurrying up so much, because I could do it by parts and enjoy it for longer. But I didn't, so boo me and bleh. It was so good, so well written, so humanistic? I know it's an old fashioned word that makes some people giggle, but I can't use any other. The story is pretty much melodramatic and the plot could make a base for drama series, sorts of Russian TV bakes like pancakes recently. Laza [...]

    7. And my faith in modern Russian literature is restored. Just like that. This is a brilliant book. From the title alone one could be lead to believe that this is a book of love stories, featuring a suave and mysterious Lazarus (because honestly, a name like that in Russia??). Alternatively, one could be fooled into thinking of it as something biblical. Or - more of a family saga. It's really the latter. Even though this *is* a book of love stories to some degree, it's not a very typical romantic c [...]

    8. "Vreau sa raman aici, spuse ea ferm si se minuna si ea pentru ca niciodata in viata ei nu vorbise asa, niciodata in viata ei nu voise nimic pentru ea, nu indraznise si iata ca era asa de simplu, trebuia numai sa traga puternic aer in piept si sa spuna. Pur si simplu sa spuna."

    11. Напълно съм съгласна със Стивън Кинг, че the road to hell is paved with adverbs.

    13. Well. Looks like I am going to be one of a few who didn't like this book. I would even hate it if it wasn't for its second part. For me the good book is made up of a good plot, content and good writing/language style. Unfortunatelly, this one - The Women of Lazarus - lacks of all three of them. Ok, the plot could be built better but still it's all right. What disturbed me the most was the author's writing/language style. It felt like she tried to show off putting as many possible stylistic devic [...]

    14. After reading the superb novel ”The Women of Lazarus”, I interviewed Marina Stepnova for my blog (the interview is in English): lecturile-emei/201

    15. One of the worst books I've ever read, and opinion in the reading group that chose this for our March selection seems to be running the same direction.A few reasons I hated this book (a word I rarely use!). First, none of the characters are ultimately sympathetic. Lazarus himself is barely present in the book. His young bride's aloofness and anger are understandable, but Stepnova does nothing to humanize her to the reader. Lidia, Lazarus's granddaughter, is *almost* an interesting character unti [...]

    16. One of my favorites of 2012 Lazar's Women/The Women of Lazarus is a not-so-typical family saga, thanks to thematic and stylistic twists. (Or maybe overload?) The reading is sometimes uncomfortable (e.g. ballerinas smoking in the bathroom) but I found the book surprisingly rewarding once I realized I shouldn't read it too literally. (There's more on my blog, here.)

    20. This was magnificent, just magnificent. There are so many things I loved about the book. The writing style, the characters, the story, the atmosphere. But, more than anything, I loved the love. There is just so much love in the novel, it's basically on every page. And it's not just sweet or nice. But it's beautiful. This love is often scattered, misused, misdirected, but it's always there, it's always struggling to survive in this cruel, horrible world. All the characters are trying, again and ag [...]

    21. Women of Lazarus is a saga set in Moscow and the Russian fictional town of Ensk, starting from the Russian Revolution to modern times. Lazarus Lindt, a poor orphan, is recognized by a physicist to be a genius. He falls in love with the physicist’s wife, who is not only happily married to her husband but twice his age. There is a lot of love in the book, though not always about true-love – it’s also about love being painful, cruel, bungled. In the book, the three women in the life of Lazaru [...]

    23. You will enjoy this book if you can allow the author to take you on a free-sail from one character to another. The story has an interesting plot but don't expect a thriller. What keeps you going is the occasional deep dives in less significant characters whose beautifully described insignificant life makes them special. Don't rush into pages. Let the scenes be described, let the side stories give the story wings.

    24. This is a marvellous book that does not stand back for the Russian classics with regards to storytelling, caracters or language. The three women of Lasarus Lindt are made alive through a decade of turmoil In Russia, and it is impossible not to get drawn into the fascinating story.
