    1. I loved these stories so much! I've reread them over and over and never got tired of the adventurese sledding, the getting stuck in the chimney, and so much more. They're just the sort of raw old-fashioned New England stories that make you feel like you've taken a short trip back in time and met these people in the flesh. Highly recommended for all ages.

    2. These are great stories set in western Maine in the years following the Civil War. Six cousins, made orphans by the war, go to live with their grandparents, the Old Squire and Grandmother Ruth. The short stories are about their adventures on the farm, in the woods and at school. Old timey ways are sprinkled liberally throughout the narratives which are told from the point of one of the boys. The assortment of cousins is well-rounded. Addison is the brainy, clever cousin who quickly sees through t [...]

    3. Stories of farm life - country school, hard work and fun, odd neighbors, adventures, trying to make a buck - all about young cousins being raised by their Grandsire. The one cousin, Addison, can outwit an adult any day, and the chapters about his battles with the local scumbag were my favorite. Old-fashioned flavour and good fun. Apparently Stephens was a very popular and prolific author at the time - ! So many great books fall through the cracks! If you like the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, or p [...]

    4. I highly recommend this delightful book! Although it is fiction it is based on the stories written by C.A. Stephens after the civil war. His stories were based on events in his life but embellished, changed to protect family and greatly fictionalized! Every chapter is a little vignette of life on a Main farm and the many details of country work and play for a young boy. I found it engaging, educational, and couldn't stop relating the funny stories to my family. Even when they asked me to stop!

    5. Excellent book for the whole family! My family just finished reading this. It's a compilation of the best stories C.A. Stephens wrote about the Old Squire's Farm. They selected the most hopeful, enjoyable stories because it appears Stephens wrote many possible endings for the characters.

    6. I stood in the isles of the book store browsing through this book and laughed until tears ran down my cheeks!
