    1. „Venea din timpul diez”, scrisă de Bogdan Suceavă, este poate cea mai bizară carte din literatura română contemporană citită până acum, dar și cea care zugrăvește cel mai bine substraturile socio-politice din România post-decembristă. Multe și elucubrante sunt teoriile înțesate în paginile acestui roman, învăluite toate într-un misticism religios sau naționalist care nu mă surprinde foarte mult.Cultul actual al lui Arsenie Boca, peregrinările orbești la moaște, înc [...]

    2. Suceava’s novel describes the turmoil of the early nineties, immediately after the fall of communism, in Romania’s capital, Bucharest. The novel focuses on two mystical-nationalist sects that, although fictional, are inspired by the mad reality of those years: The Tidings of the Lord, whose leader is Vespasian Moisa; and the Stephanists, whose leader is a reincarnation of Stephen the Great (famous Moldavian 15th century prince, who won forty-six of forty-eight battles against the Turks). One [...]

    3. Bogdan Suceava is one of the best Romanian young writers. Every of his books is a hit. Warmly recommended.

    4. When I first read it back in 2004, this book was a true revelation. I reread it recently and was not surprised to see that that first impression still holds. Coming from an Off-Key Time is a special novel, it marks like no other book in Romanian literature the spirit of the country’s first decade after the fall of Communism. Sure, it take you a step or two beyond the 'meager' reality of those years but in doing so only emphasizes all that was true of that surreal times. And it all makes for an [...]

    5. "Coming from an Off-Key Time" by Bogdan Suceava deals with the psycho-social transformations of post-communist societies. The action is located in Bucharest, Romania but it could happen anywhere. The book is lucid and ironical, deadly serious in a playful way. It is one of the best novels written in Eastern Europe in the last two decades. Don`t miss the meow of the undercover secret service cat!

    8. Suceava's book is set in Bucharest in the last decade of the 20th century, when a bizzare array of false prophets and their kick-offs is attempting to take over the streets of the city, and then the rest of the world, using to that end a variety of ingenious methods, ranging from public speaches to beating up infidel merchants. Yet one does not at all need to be acquainted with Romania's recent history in order to fully grasp or enjoy the book. For although it is a work of fiction, it could well [...]

    9. Bogdan Suceava is one of the most tenacious and the most prolific contemporary Romanian authors. Coming from an Off-Key Time is his best novel. Set in Eastern Europe during the first decade of liberty, the 90’s, the novel is at the same time a satire of chaotic times and a serious, deep introspection into the soul of a Christian, Latin and always effervescent nation and its people. Coming from an Off-Key Time, reminiscent of Bulgakov and Marquez, is written with a Ionesco’s savor for the com [...]

    10. A powerful example of post-communist Romanian fiction, "Coming from an Off-Key Time" is considered one of the best novels depicting Romanian transition, that extremely difficult period which still does not seem to come to an end. Suceava analyzes this bizarre period, the Nineties, concentrating on what may occur in a country where all points of references disappear, first suffocated by dictatorship, then disappearing after the fall of Communism. We are in Bucharest, which appears to us as a "no [...]

    11. After more than 40 years of communist nightmare, Romania (don’t even think about Dracula , please) comes back to life. But what seemed to be a paradise is merely a purgatory. In this world of illusion a chimera replace another. False new age prophets and extreme right leaders try to monopolize the naïve, reborn heart of a nation. What is amazing in this novel is the view on the freshly acquired freedom . Is the democracy a system or above all a state of mind?No longer the “understood necess [...]

    12. Stumbled on this quite by chance at the right time and place which is a good enough reason to round up a solid 4.5 to 5 stars. This novel will always serve as a reminder of what was going on in my life when I read it!

    13. There is a lot to like about this book -- style, ideas, humor -- but I would not recommend it to non-Romanians. The translation is poor, and the frequent cultural references would be lost.
