The first time I saw this book I picked it up and couldn't stop laughing about it. It's such a silly book but done very tongue in cheek and wittily. I didn't buy it that first perusal, but on the second time I came across this book at the Modern Jewish Museum in San Francisco, I knew I wasn't leaving without it. This book is broken into three different sections from the least offensive Jews to those who have seriously embarrassed and harmed the tribe through their actions and deeds. I know that [...]
This book isn't the kind of book with a story and characters that you just sit down and read one day, it's one of those coffee table gems that you pick up and will entertain you. I found myself laughing at a lot of the inside jokes and recognizing moments from when I was younger and hearing my own parents make similar comments. It was absolutely hilarious.
Ok, I might end up agreeing with just about anything in this book but back off Nimoy and Shatner. LOL
Hilarious. Easy to read in one sitting or in several small doses. Won't change your life but good for several laughs. Viva le Jew!
Good laughSherman includes some fun stories in the great tradition of self deprecating Jews. An easy read to skim and drop in on whatever catches your attention.
I wavered when I started this about what its purpose was and whether I'd enjoy it. Sometimes I forget how much of a minority the Jews really are in the grand scheme of things and how unique some of the universal experiences of Jews of any particular era and geography can be. I think the purpose of the book is to remind me of that and provide me an outlet to feel at home in that identity. Some of the humor is crude but it resonates with my experience growing up. I wouldn't necessarily expect thos [...]
Overall, I thought this was a fun, quick read. Eventually, the bit got somewhat old and some jokes became repetitive (maybe we Jews really are all somewhat the same?). I cared more to read about some of those highlighted in the book than others. I felt like the author did a great job crafting his jokes (and liberal use of yiddish) in a way that would relate to Jews all over, in that every Jewish person reading this will likely be reminded of some part of the place or way they were brought up.
