    1. If books could be food for thought, this is a platter! From the evolution of humans, to group, to family, to rivalry, to society, to country, evolution of religion, politics, God Lots and lots of controversies! Mostly from an Indian context.Initial stories had much more punch and impact than latter ones (except the mind blowing last chapter!)Really enjoyed this! Thanks Santa for the lovely gift and fellow mates for the enriching discussions.

    3. Historical account of the flight of Aryans from Volga (Russia) to Ganga (India) stretched over 20,000 yearsOne of the landmark historical-fiction penned in hindi by the super amazing gifted Rahul Sankrityayan. The depths of his histyorical canvas startles me, that too when this book was actually first written & published in 1942!Wish we had a English translation for all his books.Rahul Sanskrityayan was much bigger than William Dalrymple & Amitava Ghosh combined together.Hope the English [...]

    4. By the time a human being says goodbye to this World, he or she would have gone through a varied amount of experiences. A human life viewed in retrospect is an odyssey of sorts, a journey through cultures, lives, relationships and environments. To use a little more decorative language, it can be said that every life is a story that walks on two legs : always exciting and never much of a bore ! Now zoom out that viewing lens a little bit and let’s look at a town, then a village and let’s go f [...]

    5. Even when I had barely read 3 or 4 chapters, I realized that Volga se Ganga was going to be one of those few books that you keep pulling out from the shelf and read again and again. What an exquisite way of writing history! The concept of the book is very interesting. Man’s journey of 8000 years is divided into 20 short stories, from prehistoric times on the upper banks of Volga, to the years of approaching climax of the Indian freedom struggle. I am amazed by the magnitude of details provided [...]

    6. highly recommend it's difficult to get this book these days i guess (always out of stock). it was written in hindi , n been translated to engslish, n almost all indian languages i read the kannada translation.

    11. 2.5One of those books whose name I remembered from my school days and finally picked up to read. With such a long built anticipation, expectations were high. But the book sadly didn't live up to them. The stories in the collection show snippets from various eras for Human history as Aryan tribes move into India fron Central Asia and settle down. Although they are called stories, they are more like sketches and descriptions of those periods often from the point of view of verity of characters. The [...]

    13. Finally done with this epic and I loved it.I am an absolute no one to write a review for this amazing book. But I must say, it was an experience in itself. The way society has changed over the past few thousand years, and why. Can't say I understood all of it but somehow, I felt my own thoughts resonating through major parts of the book.I would recommend this book to everyone, however would suggest not to take up the original Hindi version as at times it becomes hard to understand.Try getting hand [...]

    14. One of the best book on the origin of India, based on folklores of different times and countries, described in 20 chapters of the book. Decades ago the book was ignored and banned by riches and orthodox Indians being one of the reasons that the book and author, titled as "Mahapundit", are underrated.Book starts from 6000 BC and moves sequentially forward in different chapters to twentieth century. It strongly focuses on the idea of Communism and why it is better. I'll recommend it a must read fo [...]

    16. Oh! What a book! The writer is brilliant! Simply brilliant! This idea of presenting the history of Indian civilization coming from Aryans, then getting mixed with the 'asuras' and finally maturing into a more contemporary outlook in the form of twenty short stories is just genius, brilliant, all superlatives!I read this book 'Volga se Ganga' by Rahul Sankrityayan in Hindi, the language it was originally written in. It's one of those books of Hindi literature that has been translated maximum numb [...]

    18. Had the fortune of reading this gem in Tamil. It’s mesmerising that the author could walk us down a 4000 year history lane with just 20 short stories. Shatters many a scared images and exposes the cancerous scams of religions along the way. A real eye opener.Special mention to the last chapter. Pure fire. Communism/socialism for social justice is a completely new perspective (atleast to me) and surprisingly is one of the better arguments for Communism I have heard so far in the Capitalism vs Co [...]

    19. It's a story collection which traverses the history - from the beginning of mankind to the present times. It's like seating in a time machine and taking a journey from 6000 B.C to the present times. You can know the amount of research went in to write this great book only after this book.

    22. One of the most underrated and undiscovered book which shows the mankind history in short beautiful stories.is is a very fundamental work done in 1944 which at that time north india could not accepted and revolted because it was way beyond of that timeevery Indian should read this book to understand the dynamic nature of History and mankind

    23. The best narration on history, culture and migration. Starting from wild European tribes, traveling with the Aryan migration to the subcontinent and reaching till the point of Gandhi and modern India, the set of short stories depicts history in the most entertaining manner mixing facts with fiction and being bold enough to showcase the real flow of culture overriding all the taboos and myths. The book gives enough food-for-thought to ponder upon and challenge the history, culture and current civ [...]

    26. I have read this book long back like 7 years ago in Telugu. Though i am not sure about how well it is translated in English, this book definitely gives a well rational approach towards the evolution of humanity, civilization, culture, religion and the division of people into different socioeconomic classes. Not a collection of complicated articles but a dozen or so beautiful short stories covering a time span of thousands of years of human history.
