    1. This complicated (in the best way) noir has several brutal murders, stolen antiquities, a mystery man who owns pricey tuxedos yet lives in a janitor's closet, mounds of cash, and a one-eared mutt. The setting is 1960's San Francisco with an emphasis on Chinatown and there is a great feel for the place (like in the descriptions of Chinese funerals) but the book really excels in it's characters. They are richly drawn with strong back stories and, interestingly, many (not all) of those with flaws s [...]

    2. even though i eased through this book in five days while being on holiday, it was quite a mediocre read. the mystery did not feel like a mystery at all and with that amount of "main" characters in such a short book ended up making everyone two-dimensional and even bland. besides, the leading man, the samuel hamilton after which this series is apparently called, has the same amount of agency in terms of plot development as a chinese jar.i kept comparing it in my head with stieg larsson's books an [...]

    7. William Gordon is a late-blooming author and the husband Isabel Allende. I had the pleasure of seeing the two of them together at a Left Coast Writers gathering and hearing William read selections from several books.I love this book. As with many of his other works, it takes place in the 60s (as you might guess by the cover design) and has a Dashiell Hammett quality to it. Anyone who loves the San Francisco of Herb Caen will love this book. The writing is sometimes uneven and Gordon occasionally [...]

    8. Good plot but worst-written book I have read in a long time. Reads like a decent effort of a creative writing student. And, The grammar, spelling, punctuation and syntax errors are numerous and egregious. I had to,look to see if this was self- published. But no, there was a publisher, too cheap, apparently to,hire a proofreader. Awful. M
