    1. Bennett Cerf compiled many books for Random House in the 1930s and 1940s of novels popular at the time. Their "Giant" series would include several full-length novels in one volume.     2. The four stars are for Mason’s “The House of the Arrow,” the only of the three stories I enjoyed. His inspector Hanaud actually sometimes reminded me of Poirot… (Mason, by the way, is better known for his book “The Four Feathers.”) The other two stories by E. C. Bentley (Trent’s Last Case) and Anthony Berkeley (Before the Fact) were simply unreadable.
