  1. Though I'd heard the author's name mentioned over the years, I didn't really know anything about him until reading this book. It was the first of a series of autobiographical memoirs he wrote in the 1960s, this one dealing with his childhood and early career (1893-1941). His introduction to Washington society and power circles came though his clerkship with Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis.
