    2. A spare and strange and often surreal book, although I'd be hard pressed to call it a work of surrealism. Short, but powerful. Definitely the sort of book that could use repeated readings. Most powerful for me was a story called Childhood, Boyhood, Youth--a young boy's relationship to his father as his father goes from being an engineer in communist China to a field worker during purges. Visceral, but not easily categorized.
